Atharv's Poems

Mean Old Witch
I am a mean old witch with a hat,
And I ride on a broom with my cat,
And my shoes are pointy
And my chin is too,
So you better watch OUT
'cause I might scare you,
I am a mean old witch with a hat!
Boo!

Georgie Porgie
Georgie Porgie, pudding' and pie
Kissed the girls and made them cry,
When the boys came out to play
Georgie Porgie ran away.

Early to bed by Benjamin Franklin
Early to bed and Early to rise
makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

The school bell is ringing
The school bell is ringing
Children are singing
We are on our way to school today.
Our shoes are new
Our lunch boxes too
So shout Hooray
We are in school today!

The Dandelion
Oh Dandelion yellow as gold
what do you do all day?
I wait and wait in the tall green grass
Till the children come out to play.

Oh Dandelion yellow as gold
what do you do all night?
I wait and wait till the cold dews fall
and my hair grows long and white.

And what do you do when your hair is white
And the children come out to play?
They hold me in their dimpled hands
And blow my hair away

Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns
Hot cross buns
One a penny, two a penny
Hot cross buns
If you have no daughters
Give thme to your sons
One a penny, two a penny
Hot cross buns

You're grand old flag

You're a grand old flag
You're high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You're the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Every heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should all acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Diddle, Diddle, Dumpling

Diddle, Diddle, dumpling, my son John,
Went to bed with his stocking on,
One shoe off and one shoe on,
Diddle, Diddle, dumpling, my son John.

This is Halloween

Witches sailing through the sky,
On their broomsticks way up high,
Black cats howl as they go by,
For this is Halloween!

Jack-O-laterns big and round,
On each gatepost can be found,
Ghost and goblins all around,
For this is Halloween!

Ooooooooooooo This is Halloween!
Ooooooooooooo This is Halloween!

Let us borrow an old sheet,
Make a costume nice and neat,
And go walking down the street,
For this is Halloween!

To the windows we will creep,
With our ugly faces peep,
Scare the folks who are half asleep,
For this is Halloween!

Ooooooooooooo This is Halloween!

Ooooooooooooo This is Halloween!!!

Fall Leaves

Red yellow orange brown
Fall leaves flutter to the ground
Leaving branches tall and bare
A wintry chill is in the air

Little Bo Peep

Little bo peep
has lost her sheeps
And can;t tell where to find them
Leave them alone
And they will come home
Wagging their tails behind them

Summing up two numbers

Atharv is about 4.5 years old now and I thought this would the right age to get him interested in numbers. So, a few days ago I taught him how to sum up two numbers. The sequence that I followed was.
  1. Count using fingers when both numbers can be represented using fingers of one hand (4 + 5 )
  2. Count using fingers when the sum can be represented using fingers of both hands (7 + 3)
  3. Written representation of summation. (x + y = ?? and ask him to fill up ??)
  4. Count using fingers when at least one of numbers can be represented using fingers of both hands (8 + 91). I taught him to use fingers for the smaller number and then start counting onwards from the number that comes after the bigger number.
Of course, I had to use cows/butterflies/lions etc as the objects that were being summed up for #1 and some part of #2 to keep his interest (For example, daddy saw 2 lions and you saw 3. So how many lions did both of us see together?) But once he became interested in it, it was a smooth sailing.

The whole experience was so amazing... Kids do have brilliant minds and excellent grasping power. For his age, these are complex concepts. But the rate at which he picked up things was truly mind-blowing.

I realized that I immensely enjoy teaching... definitely much more than software stuff! Perhaps something worth spending some part of life on.

Now, I plan to teach him stuff like carry-forward. Lets see how that goes.............

Friends ?

Here is a cute one:

Assuming that the universe has "n" people, are there at least 2 people with exactly same number of friends ?

Assume that friendship is symmetrical (i.e If A is a friend of B, then B is a friend of A). Also assume that A is not a friend of A.

[Hint: Pigeonhole principle]

Photograph Or Kiss ? "Another version"

There is another statement the man could have made so that the lady will have to give him not only her photograph, but also a kiss ?

What could that statement be ?

Photograph Or Kiss ?

Here is a nice one from the book mentioned in my previous post.

A wise man (do they exist?) once said to a beautiful lady: "I would like to ask you a little favor. I will make a statement. All I ask is that if the statement is true, you give me a photograph of yourself. Will you do that for me?" The lady assented. "But also", continued the man, "if my statement is false, then I want you to promise not to give me your photograph. Agreed?" The lady agreed.

The man then cleverly made a statement such that the lady realized that in order to keep her word, she will have to give him not a photograph, but a kiss instead.

What statement could he have made ?

The Riddle of Scheherazade: And Other Amazing Puzzles

Well.... I have always liked solving puzzles. I guess, I have always been quite fascinated by "mathematical logic". Recently, started reading this awesome book "The Riddle of Scheherazade: And Other Amazing Puzzles", by Dr. Raymond Smullyan.

Quite an amazing book really... It also presents many puzzles based on "coercive logic". Some of them are quite challenging. A must read for anyone who is into puzzles.

The next ones on my list are (All of these are by Dr. Smullyan)
  • The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes (Dealing with retrograde analysis)
  • The Chess Mysteries of the Arabian Knights
  • The Lady or the Tiger?
  • Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems

Why Not?

Well... I am not a very big fan of blogging. It has been really hard to find time for this. But recently, I am getting quite curious about it as tons of my friends are "blogging".

So, why not ? I will give it a shot. Let's see how it goes.
